With no foothills to obstruct the view, the jagged peaks and deep canyons of the Teton Range rising abruptly from the basin floor are clearly visible from Jackson Hole. Spring wildflowers, plentiful and varied wildlife, soaring peaks and cool alpine lakes make this an idyllic mountain setting. Your guide will share the highlights as well as the off-the-beaten-path spots on this day.
Choose to take the aerial tram or opt for the boat ride across Jenny Lake. Aerial Tram up 4,139 vertical feet to the summit 10,450 feet above sea level. The summit offers 360-degree views of the Teton Range, Jackson Hole Valley, and the surrounding mountain ranges. The tram also offers access to climbing, running, and hiking trails.
Instead of the tram, you might choose to cross Jenny Lake on a boat ride and access hiking trails in Cascade Canyon, such as Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. Admire the peaks surrounding String Lake, and learn about the strong-willed Mormon Pioneers that settled this area.
Spend the morning on an adrenaline-inducing Class II and III whitewater rafting experience of the Snake River or choose a river float for a more relaxing excursion.
Choose between hiking around Phelps Lake and taking in the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve or heading up to Colter Bay and hiking at the edge of Jackson Lake. There will be plenty of hiking options. Your guide can help you pick the ones best suited to your family’s activity levels and interests.
Today we head north to Yellowstone National Park. We will visit mud pots that bubble, geysers that spout and vents that steam in the Southwestern area of Yellowstone.
See a number of geysers, including Old Faithful and Castle Geyser, as they erupt from the earth. Gaze on rainbow-colored hot springs that paint the ground in vivid hues of green, gold, and blue, such as Grand Prismatic Spring and Morning Glory Pool.
Marvel at West Thumb within Yellowstone Lake that allowed fishermen to catch a fish and then turn and dip it into a boiling volcanic caldera to instantly cook it before the hook was even removed. Yellowstone Lake is the largest alpine lake in North America.
The northwest section of Yellowstone, including Norris Geyser Basin, features its oldest and hottest thermal areas. Not-to-be-missed is Mammoth Springs with its travertine terraces–natural stone terraces reminiscent of a frozen waterfall formed by moving water that is rich with deposits of carbonate minerals.
Spend the afternoon visiting the sites of Central Yellowstone. Often overlooked at Yellowstone are the park’s nearly 300 waterfalls and a number of impressive lakes.
The Upper and Lower Falls within the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone are breathtaking destinations in their own right.
Lower Falls plunges 308 feet into the Yellowstone River, twice the height of Niagara Falls. In some places, the walls of the canyon are 1,200 feet tall and 4,000 feet wide.
Before we say goodbye to the World’s First National Park, we encourage you to get up early and head to the park for an early morning wildlife viewing.
On our way back to Jackson, we will visit the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center as well as the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway and the Teton Pass.
